わたくしが小児マヒを題材に撮り始めたのは.北海道全体で罹患者900人をはるかに突破し,死亡者も60人を越した8月下旬からでした。
It was the end of August, when I began taking photographs of infantile paralysis. By then, the number of patients exceeded 900 in Hokkaido and the death exceeded 60.
７月中旬頃からグラフキャンペーンを思いたちながらも,小児マさは写真的にきわめてむずかしい題材でもあり,また題材が題材だけに,街角でスナップするようなわけにはいかず,入院中のこどもとそのお母さんを撮るにしても,まず病院側の了解が必要でもあり,病院側の了解がついたとしてもお母さんたちの協力を得ることは,とても可能な相談ではないと思い,悶々とした日が１カ月あまりつづきました。
I began considering photograph campaign at the middle of July. But infantile paralysis is a difficult subject for photographs. It is a serious issue. I cannot take them at the wown like taking snapshots. Taking photos os children and their mothers needs the permission of hospitals. Even after the permission of hospitals, cooperation of mothers seemed more difficult. It looked impossible for me. I was worrying more than one month.
毎日報道される小児マヒの蔓延,たりないワクチンと「鉄の肺」,決定的な治療法のない小児マヒ,後遺症の問題など,やむにやまれぬ気持をどうしても押えることができませんでした。
Epidemic of infantile paralysis reported in media. Shortage of vaccine and "Iron Lung." No perfect treatment method against infantile paralysis, hangover etc. I could not resist my emotion.
８月２４日,わたくしの住む旭川も「特別防疫対策指定地区」に指定され,いよいよ足許に火がついたおもいで,ついに意を決して8月27日旭川日赤病院の了解を得て撮影にかかったわけです。
On August 24, my city Asahikawa was designated as "Special designated area against disease." It made me decide to begin taking photos, and I got permission from Asahikawa Red Cross Hospital on August 27.
撮影の初日に呼吸マヒで「鉄の肺」にはいった修ちゃんの死にぶつかったことは,わたくしにとっては最大のショックでした。修ちゃんの場合も隆ちやんの場合も何回か撮影を断念しようかと思いましたが,お母さんたちの協力により撮影を続けてきました。とかくこの種の題材の場合,作者の態度いかんによっては問題をひきおこしがちで，この点とくに意を注ぎました。
On the first day, I faced the death of Shu-chan in the "iron lung" who died of breething paralysis. It was the biggest shock. I was about to quit the plan at the death of Shu-chan and Takashi-chan. Somehow with the help of mothers, I could continue taking photos. Anyway, sometimes this kind of job to take photos tend to cause problems from the attitude os the photographers. I paid most attention for this.
１１月末までに35ミリフィルム100本あまりを撮りましたが,最初から何らかのかたちで発表したいとは思いながらも,具体的な発表方法など考えないまま撮影に集中したわけで,それがこういうかたちの写真集になるとは本当に思いがけないことです。
I spent more than 100 films of 35 mm. I did not decide how to announce at first. I consentrated in takin. It is amazing to publish this kind of photographic book.
またアマチュアのわたくしが写真集を発刊するなど考えようによっては大それたことだと思い何度か躊麟しましたが、長年ご指導をいただいた写真家の土門拳先生のお力ぞえと商業べ一スにものらないこの写真集の発刊を引き受けていただいた写真雑誌「フォトアート」発行所,研光杜社長永井嘉一氏ならびに関係の方々のご協力により,今回発刊の運びとなったしだいです。
Is looks reckless to publish photographic book for an amateur like me. I hesitated many times. But the support of my teacher, photographer Mr. Ken Domon, and the president of Kenko co.ltd. of "PHOTO ART" magagine who accepted this publishment, Mr. Kiichi Nagai, and related people, made it possible.
製版,印刷などにつきましても発行所が東京でありながら北海道で行なうなどまったく常識を破ったいき方ですが,永井社長のご理解をいただき小児マヒの集団発生地のド真中で製版,印刷をするのも,また意味があるのではないかと考えたからです。
Editing, printing also was irregular, because they were done in Hokkaido, though the company office is in Tokyo. Different from our common sence. It looked meaningful to edite and print it in the central area of epidemic of infantile paralysis, with the understanding of president Nagai.
転場の勤務の片手間の仕事のため,もう少し時間がほしかったと思いましたが,大体予定した期間内に撮影を終ることができましたのも,旭川日赤病院,北海道整肢学院,札幌医大・旭川市のご協力と・それに直接ご協力ねがった小児マヒのこどもとそのお母さんたちのおかげです。
I wanted some more time, because it was only part time of my job. Anyway, i could finish almost among the planned period. I was helped by Asahikawa Red Cross Hospital, Hokkaido Children Rehabilitation Center, Sapporo Medical College, Asahikawa City Office, and the children of infantile paralysis and their mothers directly.
また,年末年始のご繁忙中特に「まえがき」をご執筆下さった土門先生と，わざわざ寒い旭川までおいでねがい編集をしていただいた永井嘉一氏には感謝にたえません。
このささやかな写真集「小児マヒとたたかう母と子」が,現に小児マヒにかかっているこども,後遺症のこども,小児マヒの危険にさらされている幼いこどもたちのために何らかのかたちでいかされるならば、望外のよろこびと思います。
I cannot forget thanks to teacher Domon who could write "preface" in spite of his busy schedule at the end of the year especially, and the editor Mr. Kaichi Nagai who could visit cold Asahikawa.
This humble photographic book, "Mothers and Children Fight against Polio" . If it is utilized for the children who are fighting with infantile paralysis, the children with hangover, little children who are threatened byu infantile paralysis in some ways, it is more than my happiness.
