　ポリオ体験者は、一般的に、疲労感、虚弱感、痛みといった症状を訴えます。時には、症状と結果的に起こる機能低下が絡み合った、多様な問題を抱えます。
Polio survivors generally experience symptoms of fatigue, weakness and pain often present with multiple problems that may be related to both the symptoms and to the consequent functional declines that may be occurring.

　加えて、これらの症状はこの病気に関係がないことが明らかになるかもしれません。また、こうした症状は、残っているマヒのせいで二次的に起こるものかもしれません。
In addition, other medical management issues may become apparent that are unrelated to these symptoms, or these medical issues may be a secondary consequence of the residual paralysis that is present.

　ポリオ体験者は、ポリオからの回復後２０～４０年後に、疲労感や痛みといった症状を訴えることがあります。これは、多面的な医学的症状からなり、機能の問題に関連する、複雑な形態を取ります。
Polio survivors twenty to forty years after recovery who are experiencing new symptoms of fatigue and pain present a complex picture of multiple medical issues and related functional problems.

　これらの体験者は、ポリオの専門病院で治療を受けるのが最適だということが、経験的に分かっています。そこでは、症状と体の機能を多様な手法で診ることにより、全体的な診断を下すことができます。
It has been our experience that these survivors are best served in a polio clinic which offers multidisciplinary services that permits a comprehensive evaluation of these patients, their symptoms and functional status.

　ポストポリオであるという診断は、こうした症状に関係する他の病気を取り除いた後に残る結論です。
The diagnosis of PPS is made by excluding other causes that could be responsible for these symptoms.

　この症候群であると断定する特別のけんさはありません。
There is no specific test that is reliable in diagnosing this syndrome.

　私達の病院で診察を受けた患者は、もちろん、決まり切った検査を受けなければなりません。
Patients who are evaluated in our clinic, as a matter of course, do submit to routine testing.

　この検査の第一の目的は、症状が似ていて、ポリオに関係がない他の病気を排除することです。
The primary purpose of this testing is to eliminate other non-polio medical conditions that could be responsible for a patient's symptoms.

　医学的に必要がある場合にのみ、筋電図（EMG）、えん下の検査、睡眠中無呼吸症候群の検査などが行われます。
Other tests such as electromyograms, swallowing studies, and sleep apnea studies and others are recommended only when clinically indicated.

　患者は、理学療法士や物理療法士にも診てもらいます。
Clinic patients are also evaluated by physical therapists and occupation therapists.

　筋力検査だけではなく、歩行検査も行われます。
Not only is a detailed manual muscle test performed, but a gait analysis and a functional analysis is made.

　もし必要なら、義肢装具部やリハビリ部に行くよう勧められることもあります。
If indicated, a patient is referred to the Orthotic Department and may be referred to our Seating and Mobility Clinic.

　診断の結果として、ポストポリオ患者の治療に精通した特別な医者の担当になり、あらゆる助言が行われることがあります。
At the conclusion of the evaluation, our patients again are seen by a physician with specialized training in the management of post-polio patients and all recommendations are reviewed with the patient.

　ほとんどの場合、助言に従うことにより効果があがっているかどうかを確かめるため、フォローアップが行われます。
In most cases, a follow up schedule is established in order to monitor the patient's response to our recommendation.

　要するに、ポリオ体験者が示す複雑な症状に対して、医学的にお勧めするのは、ポストポリオに精通したスタッフが揃っている病院に行って、詳しく診てもらうことです。
In summary, due to the complex picture presented by many polio survivors who are experiencing post-polio symptoms, the clinical solutions and guidance are best performed in a post-polio clinic with a physician and team members who are experienced at diagnosing and managing post-polio symptoms.
