An article in our January issue dealt with the many benefits of
exercise in warm water.

皆さんご存じでしょうが、ジョージア州ウォームスプリングスにルーズベルト記念病院が建っている訳をお話します。
That, as many of you know, is the reason the Roosevelt Institute
at Warm Springs, Georgia, exists.
その建物は、以前はジョージア・ウォームスプリングス財団が使っていました。最初、ポリオの入院病院として建てられました。今は、様々なリハビリに対応した研究所になっています。
Once known as the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation, and originally
established to rehabilitate people who had contracted polio, the
Institute today serves many functions in diverse rehab
situations.

averages 88 degrees year-round.

Springs boasts a flow of over 900 gallons-per-minute!

The spring begins its life on the surface, almost 1200 feet above
the actual springs, where the rain falls generously on Pine
Mountain, many miles away.

Following a fault line in the earth's crust, it dives deep below
the surface to a depth of 3800 feet, near a field of molten lava,
before emerging again as a natural spring.

Along this spectacular journey, the water picks up a wide variety
of minerals, giving it its unique buoyancy (equaling that of some

Among the minerals incorporated are bicarbonate silica, calcium,

It was the Creek indians who first discovered the nourishing
benefits of these naturally-warmed springs and it is believed
that Hernando De Soto spent several days enjoying the springs
when he passed through the region in 1540.

In the early 1900s, a group of wealthy Eastern businessmen,
convinced that the beneficial properties of the springs would
attract visitors from far and wide, created a lavish resort on

A New-Orleans style facility, the Meriwether Inn Resort Hotel was
built on the hill overlooking the springs.

The resort soon became a world-famous health spa and flourished
for many years.

But, like many luxuries, it became a victim of the Great
Depression and began a decline in the '20s.

But it was during its heyday that FDR heard about this unique
resort from his home in Hyde Park, New York.

After several visits, he found that the warm, buoyant waters
helped his paralyzed legs, and brought back muscles that had been
dormant for years.

In 1927, he invested two-thirds of his personal fortune, some
$200,000 and bought the struggling resort.

helping and treating other polio survivors like himself.

The Meriwether Hotel was used to house the doctors, therapists
and patients and a unique cafeteria was created where the

However, after several fires, it became obvious that the grand
old structure was a disaster waiting to happen and, in 1933, it
was torn down and replaced with an elegant marble and stone
structure with huge columns.

A blend of Greek architecture and Southern aristocracy, the new
building was named Georgia Hall.

It was so well built that it remains virtually unchanged into the
twenty-first century.

The new complex of buildings now looked down on the
newly-constructed glassed-in pools that contained underwater
tables of cypress.

Therapeutic muscle treatment and rehabilitation worked much
better when the patient was immersed in the warm buoyant waters.

Countless "miracles" occurred over the decades as an
ever-increasing number of polio patients gained back some or all
of their lost muscle strength with this unique "underwater
therapy."

In 1942, an indoor pool was built up on the hilltop just below
Georgia Hall as part of the growing complex that now included
additional housing and a Medical Center for surgery.

The lower pools were seldom used, except for recreational
swimming and the thousands of panes of glass were too much to

With neglect, even the concrete began to deteriorate.

In the mid-1990s, utilizing both public and private funds, the
Georgia Department of Natural Resources began an ambitious
project to restore the pools to their original beauty, minus the
glass enclosures.

A small museum was created to tell ? and show ? visitors what the
original facility looked like.

Dozens of historic photographs line the walls, taking visitors
through the years from the lavish resort to its present day.

graphic representations, detail to visitors how the warm springs

There is also a cascading spring of the waters for visitors to
see and even put their hands into as they walk around inside the
walls of the now-empty pools.

FDR would be very proud of today's Roosevelt Institute, which
serves some 3,000 patients annually.

But instead of polio survivors, today's patients include those

The new complex is beautifully sprawled among the pines, many of

Nearby Camp Dream houses up to eighty campers and boasts a 400-meter
